THE INTERVIEW: YDE Copenhagen

SERENE. EFFORTLESSLY CHIC. LUXURIOUS.

THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE WORDS THAT COME TO MIND WHEN YOU LOOK AT YDE COPENHAGEN’S BEAUTIFUL SPRING/SUMMER’14 COLLECTION. IT’S CHIC COLOUR-PALETTE (INCORPORATING SOFT BLUSH PINKS, A DREAMY GREY/VIOLET, SERENE WHITE AND DRAMATIC BLACKS), CHARMING LINES, MOVEMENT AND SILHOUETTES, AND SHEER PRESENCE (BOTH IN THE PHYSICAL – AT TIMES – AND METAPHORICAL SENSE) BRING A TRULY ELEGANT LINE TO THE SS14 FLOOR - SOMETHING EVERY BLOGGER AND FASHION LOVER ADORES TO COME ACROSS.YDE IS A LUXURY WOMEN’S PRÊT-À-PORTER BRAND BASED IN COPENHAGEN, AND IT’S POETIC, EFFORTLESSLY FEMININE STYLE IS CREATED BY THE ONE AND ONLY ACCLAIMED DANISH DESIGNER OLE YDE – WHO HAPPILY I MANAGED TO CATCH UP WITH…

Q. WAS IT ALWAYS ABOUT CREATING YOUR OWN LABEL? WAS THIS A DREAM YOU'VE ALWAYS HAD AND WORKED TOWARDS? CREATING MY OWN LABEL WAS NOT SO MUCH ON MY MIND ORIGINALLY. I STARTED MY CAREER DESIGNING ONE-OF-A-KIND DRESSES FOR PRIVATE CLIENTS, WHICH I STILL ENJOY DOING NOW. THE LOVE THAT I HAD FOR WHAT I WAS DOING PAVED THE WAY. IT WAS A NATURAL PROGRESSION AND IT DEFINITELY FEELS LIKE A DREAM.’

Q. WHO IS THE YDE WOMAN? DESCRIBE HER TO US. ‘SHE’S PLAYFUL, YOUTHFUL, ROMANTIC, FEMININE, STYLISH, CONFIDENT AND VULNERABLE AT THE SAME TIME.’

Q. CONGRATULATIONS ON SUCH A STUNNING SS14 COLLECTION - TALK US THROUGH THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE LINE. ‘FOR THE SPRING/SUMMER 2014 SEASON, THE INSPIRATION CAME FROM “SKAGEN”, A SMALL CITY IN THE VERY NORTH PART OF DENMARK. IN THE LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY IT BECAME A GATHERING PLACE FOR THE LEADING SCANDINAVIAN ARTISTS OF THE TIME. IT’S AN AREA FAMOUS FOR ITS LIGHT AND ITS BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPES PORTRAYED IN MANY ICONIC DANISH PAINTINGS. THE MOOD AND THE COLORS OF THE COLLECTION WERE INSPIRED BY PAINTINGS OF THE SEASIDE WHERE ELEGANT YET CASUALLY DRESSED WOMEN ARE STROLLING IN THEIR WHITE SUMMER DRESSES. OUR SPRING/SUMMER 2014 COLLECTION IS A MODERN INTERPRETATION OF THAT SAME FEELING.’

Q. WHAT MATERIALS DID YOU REALLY ENJOY WORKING WITH AND INCLUDING WITHIN THE SS14 LINE? ‘A LOT OF NATURAL FIBERS, COTTON, LINEN BUT MOSTLY SILK MIXED WITH NOVELTY FABRICS WITH MAN-MADE FIBERS, SUCH AS LASER-CUT FLOWERS USED IN A FEW PIECES.’

Q.WOULD YOU SAY YOU ARE A TREND DRIVEN DESIGNER? DO THE TRENDS INSPIRE YOUR WORK? ‘I KNOW IT MAY SOUND CLICHÉ BUT I REALLY DON’T FOLLOW TRENDS. THE THINGS THAT INSPIRE ME ARE THE THINGS THAT MOVE ME. I FOLLOW MY INSTINCTS MORE THAN ANYTHING.’

Q. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PIECE FROM THE COLLECTION? ‘THE LONG EVENING GOWN WITH HAND EMBROIDERED LACE, TULLE AND SILK.’

Q.IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY CELEBRITY OR PERSON WEAR YOUR DESIGNS - WHO WOULD IT BE? ‘AUDREY HEPBURN WOULD HAVE BEEN A DREAM TO DRESS, THERE ARE MANY CURRENT CELEBRITIES WHO WOULD LOOK GREAT IN YDE, NICOLE KIDMAN IS ONE FOR EXAMPLE.’

Q.YOU'VE BEEN FEATURED EVERYWHERE FROM ELLE TO LUX, IS THERE A PUBLICATION THAT YOU HAVEN'T BEEN FEATURED IN YET THAT YOU WOULD LOVE TO BE MENTIONED IN OR WORK WITH? ‘ANY OF THE FOLLOWING THREE VOGUES - AMERICAN, FRENCH OR ITALIAN. THEY EACH OFFER DIFFERENT INTERESTING WAYS OF LOOKING AT FASHION.’

Q. IF YOU WERE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO COLLABORATE WITH A HIGH STREET BRAND OR SHOP WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? ‘H&M, SINCE THEY LIKE TO WORK WITH DESIGNERS WITH DIFFERENT STYLES AND BACKGROUNDS. THEY ALSO HAPPEN TO BE SCANDINAVIAN.’

Q. IN YOUR MIND WHAT WILL AW14 BRING IN TERMS OF COLOUR AND CUTS? ‘LOTS OF BLACK (MY FAVORITE COLOR) AND LOTS OF DIFFERENT TEXTURES AND STRUCTURE.’

Q.TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING SHOW AT FASHION WEEK…‘IT IS BY FAR THE MOST EXCITING STEP FOR YDE, IT’S OUR FIRST SHOW WITH MANY EYES WATCHING US. IT WON’T BE EASY FOR SURE BUT WE’LL LEARN A LOT AND WE’LL GIVE IT OUR BEST. IT’S DEFINITELY A MILESTONE - A DREAM COME TRUE. THE IMPORTANT THING IS TO ENJOY THE JOURNEY SO WE HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT.’

Q. WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE YDE IN THE FUTURE? WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE BRAND? I WOULD LIKE YDE TO BECOME A MORE COMPLETE LIFESTYLE BRAND COVERING ALL MAJOR CATEGORIES SUCH AS JEWELLERY, BAGS AND SHOES TO START WITH. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YDE BOUTIQUES IN KEY FASHION CAPITALS. THE SKY IS THE LIMIT. THROUGHOUT IT ALL, WE WILL MAKE SURE TO KEEP THE LOVING AND HAPPY ENVIRONMENT WE WORK IN. WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE AN AMAZING GROUP OF PEOPLE WORKING TOGETHER WITH US.’

I was featured in: Shopcade’s Swag Report

EVENT: Launch of the Shopcade’s Swag Report book and SHOPCADE's Style Battle – a celebrity-filled bash attended by the app’s star-studded judging panel. TV presenter and DJ Vogue Williams was on the decks, while super blogger Ella Catliff of La Petite Anglaise rocked up looking chic, elsewhere I chatted with hairdresser to the stars – the lovely Lee Stafford, and celebrity fashion stylist Rebekah Roy, fashion photographer Sam Atkinson, creative director of world-famous makeup teams, Jana Ririnui of AOFM Pro, WEARECOLLISION magazine’s editor-in-chief Kahmarl Gordon, Elite Model Management’s Ashley-Gianna Hallett and directors of leading fashion label Ada + Nik’s Ada Zanditon and Nik Thakkar were all there to get in on the SHOPCADE action.

I was also featured in their PANEL (click HERE to see) for one of their other Style Battles.
